In this morning's passage we observe Jesus appointing The Twelve. Scripture testifies elsewhere that the apostles are the foundation of the church (Ephesians 2:20), and so this short passage speaks in a very real way to Christ's relationship to his church. It shows us that Christ rules sovereignly over his church, and he does so in numerous ways: he intecedes for his church as the only mediator between God and man, he oversees his church as the ultimate authority to whom all matters of ecclesiastical practice are subject, and he preserves his church as the Good Shepherd who promises to lose none of his sheep.
